RBR Staff Writer Published 07 March 2018

Fashion and homeware chain Next has inaugurated which is claimed to be one of the company's biggest stores at intu Metrocentre, located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England, UK.

intu has worked with Next in reconfiguring the space previously occupied by British Home Stores (BHS) for a 78,000ft² store over two levels.

This place is more than double the size of Next’s former intu Metrocentre store and was officially inaugurated b John Hall, whose Cameron Hall Developments first developed the Gateshead shopping destination in the 1980s.

The new store claims to have all of the latest fashion collection for women, men and children, a home department and Costa Coffee.

intu has invested considerably in the refurbishment of the centre’s Platinum Mall for its retailers, along with the creation and extension of a diner quarter.

intu properties regional managing director Kate Grant said: “This substantial upsizing at intu Metrocentre reflects the growing appreciation we’re seeing among retailers for the best physical stores in the right locations as they seek to rationalise their store portfolios and gain access to a higher proportion of their target customers."

nNxt official Mark Russell said: “We’ve invested a significant amount at intu Metrocentre to ensure that our new store is really worth the wait. The new concepts we have are amazing and we believe that all customers are going to love what we have in store.”

Next store will open at intu Merry Hill in the West Midlands later this year after work to convert a Sainsbury’s unit into a 75,680ft² store.

intu Merry Hill's former BHS unit will also become part of a larger Primark store in line with extension plans unveiled in January.

Sports brand Decathlon now occupies space that was once a BHS store at west London shopping destination intu Uxbridge.
